How We Pick

The honest version of what a gift guide does. Here is exactly how every pick on Char Chimney is chosen — and, just as importantly, what we don't do.

Most gift guides are vague about their method because the honest version is unglamorous. Ours isn’t glamorous either, but it’s real, it’s reproducible, and you can check it yourself. That transparency is the whole point of this page.

What we do

1. We compile the published specs. For every product, we read the manufacturer listing and spec sheet — materials, dimensions, heat ratings, BTUs, what’s in the box. Facts, from the source, not from memory.

2. We read the consensus of real owner reviews. Across retailers, we look at what buyers consistently praise and complain about — does the zipper break, does it warp, does it actually stay lit. We report that as owner consensus, never as our own hands-on testing.

3. We pull live prices. Every price on the site is fetched live from Amazon and stamped with the date we checked it, so the budget tiers are accurate and you see the real number before you click. When we can’t verify a current price, we show “check price” rather than a number that might be wrong.

4. We do the value math. This is the part a gift buyer can’t easily do alone: is a “26-piece set” real value or padding? Is the expensive thermometer worth triple the cheap one for a beginner? Is a gift set a discount or a markup? We work it out so you don’t have to.

5. We choose for giftability. The final filter is whether it’s actually a good gift: broad appeal, easy availability, easy returns, and usefulness across skill levels. The can’t-go-wrong test — because the buyer’s real fear is picking the wrong thing for a hobby they don’t share.

What we don’t do

We haven’t tested these products, and we say so.Plenty of guides imply they lab-tested twenty grills. We haven’t tested any. We own no units, we run no test kitchen, and we won’t stage a photo to suggest otherwise. Every product image comes straight from the retailer, labeled as such.

We think that’s a feature, not a gap. The grilling-media field is full of borrowed credentials and vague “in our tests” claims that don’t survive a second look. We’d rather compete on something we can actually stand behind: transparent research, live prices, and honest value math.

The numbers we’re proud of

Sponsored placements: 0. Free products accepted in exchange for coverage: 0. Products we claim to have tested: 0. Those are the numbers where zero is the good number — and they’re the ones we’ll always keep at zero.

When we get it wrong

Prices move, products get discontinued, and we make mistakes. If you spot a wrong price, a dead link, or a pick that’s no longer sold, tell usand we’ll fix it. Our correction approach is covered in the editorial policy, and how we make money is on the affiliate disclosure page.
